Tatsudomari Line

A Scenic Drive Through the Northern Tsugaru Peninsula

The Tatsudomari Line is the northern section of National Route 339 that crosses the Tsugaru Peninsula. Stretching for approximately 20 kilometers between Kodomari in Nakadomari Town and Cape Tappizaki in Sotogahama Town, it is a popular scenic driving route in northern Aomori.

Along the way, the scenery changes dramatically from the rugged coastline of the Sea of Japan to the mountains of the northern Tsugaru Peninsula and the waters of the Tsugaru Strait. This variety has made the route especially popular with drivers and motorcycle riders from both Aomori and other parts of Japan.

The Tatsudomari Line is closed during the winter season, generally from around mid-November until late April, because of heavy snowfall and icy road conditions. Travelers should check road conditions before planning a trip during the transitional seasons.

Dramatic Landscapes of Sea and Mountains

The southern end of the Tatsudomari Line around Kodomari follows the coast of the Sea of Japan. Rugged rock formations and exposed cliffs create a powerful landscape, while the relatively sparse vegetation allows the vastness of the sea and sky to take center stage.

As you continue north, the road gradually enters a mountainous area. The route climbs along steep ridges and winding roads, with a series of curves that make the drive itself part of the experience.

The contrast between the open coastal scenery and the winding mountain roads gives the Tatsudomari Line its distinctive character. It is a route where the landscape can change noticeably within a short distance.

Highlights and Places to Stop Along the Way

Several scenic spots can be enjoyed along the route. One of the most impressive is Gongenzaki, a huge rocky promontory extending into the Sea of Japan. Its distinctive shape is said to resemble a reclining lion.

From the summit of Gongenzaki, visitors can enjoy expansive views that may include Hokkaido, Mount Iwaki, and Lake Jusan. The combination of the rugged coastline and distant mountains makes this an excellent viewpoint for appreciating the scale of the northern Tsugaru landscape.

Nanatsudaki Waterfall

Another memorable sight is Nanatsudaki Waterfall, where water cascades down a rocky slope in seven separate stages. White spray runs across the dark rock, creating a beautiful contrast.

On calm days, the waterfall can take on an almost delicate appearance, with the water flowing down the cliff like silken threads. Its character changes with the season and weather, making it a rewarding stop during a scenic drive.

Panoramic Views from Chokandai Observatory

One of the highlights of the Tatsudomari Line is Chokandai Observatory, located at the route’s highest point at an elevation of approximately 475 meters.

On a clear day, the observatory offers an impressive 360-degree panorama. Hokkaido can be seen to the north, while Mount Iwaki rises to the south. In the distance, visitors may also be able to spot Tappizaki Lighthouse and wind turbines along the surrounding landscape.

The view is particularly beautiful around sunset. As the sun sinks over the Sea of Japan, the sky and water are bathed in warm colors, creating one of the most memorable scenic moments along the route.

A Refreshing Road for Driving and Touring

With very few traffic lights and many stretches of open road, the Tatsudomari Line provides a strong sense of freedom for those traveling by car or motorcycle. The changing scenery, winding mountain sections, and expansive ocean views make the journey itself a major attraction.

The road was once known locally as a “phantom road” because completing the route took many years of development and improvement. Today, it has become an important route supporting tourism across the Tsugaru Peninsula.

A Scenic Route to Cape Tappizaki

The Tatsudomari Line is more than simply a road connecting two destinations. It is a scenic journey through some of the most dramatic landscapes of northern Aomori, linking the Sea of Japan, the mountains of the Tsugaru Peninsula, and the Tsugaru Strait.

For travelers visiting Cape Tappizaki or exploring Tsugaru Quasi-National Park, driving the Tatsudomari Line is an excellent way to experience the region. Take your time at the viewpoints, enjoy the changing scenery, and experience the distinctive atmosphere of the northern edge of the Tsugaru Peninsula.
