The Starting Point of a World-Class Undersea Tunnel
The Seikan Tunnel stretches approximately 53.85 kilometers, making it one of the world’s longest undersea railway tunnels. From this entrance, the railway line travels beneath the seabed of the Tsugaru Strait before continuing north toward Hokkaido.
Above the tunnel entrance is a large inscription reading “Seikan Zuido” (青函隧道). The inscription was written by Yasuhiro Nakasone, who was Prime Minister of Japan at the time. It serves as a reminder of the tunnel’s importance as a major national project and of the historical era in which it was constructed.
Watch Shinkansen Trains Enter and Leave the Tunnel
A viewing platform was developed at the plaza in spring 2015. From here, visitors can watch Hokkaido Shinkansen trains as they enter or emerge from the Seikan Tunnel.
Seeing a high-speed Shinkansen train suddenly appear from the tunnel entrance and speed past the viewing area is an exciting experience. The location is particularly popular with railway enthusiasts and photographers, but families and general visitors can also enjoy watching the trains.
The Tunnel Shrine and the Breakthrough Stone
The plaza is also home to the Tunnel Shrine, which was established to commemorate the opening of the Hokkaido Shinkansen.
Its sacred object is a stone excavated when the main tunnel of the Seikan Tunnel was finally connected. Known as “Kanou Myojin”, the stone is regarded as a symbol of overcoming difficulties and having one’s wishes fulfilled.
A breakthrough stone is also displayed beside the shrine. Together, these features offer a tangible connection to the enormous construction effort and the moment when workers succeeded in joining the two sides of the tunnel.
Practical Information and Things to Keep in Mind
Seikan Tunnel Entrance Plaza is free to visit, making it an easy addition to a sightseeing itinerary in northern Aomori. It provides an opportunity to experience the intersection of local history, railway culture, and advanced engineering without an admission fee.
Visitors should be aware that winter conditions can affect access. From approximately December through March, heavy snow and icy roads may result in road closures, and the restroom facilities may also be closed. Checking the latest local conditions before visiting is recommended, especially during the winter months.
Experience the Scale of the Seikan Tunnel
The Seikan Tunnel represents the culmination of decades of planning, engineering, and human effort. At Seikan Tunnel Entrance Plaza, visitors can stand directly in front of the Honshu-side gateway and gain a sense of the immense challenge involved in constructing a railway beneath the sea.
With its impressive tunnel entrance, Shinkansen viewing platform, Tunnel Shrine, and breakthrough stone, the plaza is a worthwhile stop for travelers exploring Aomori. It is a place where history, technology, and the human determination behind one of Japan’s greatest infrastructure projects can be experienced firsthand.
