Obijima Island

A Northern Island Steeped in the Legend of Yoshitsune

Obijima Island is a small island located at the tip of Cape Tappizaki in Minmaya-Tatsuhama, Sotogahama Town, Aomori Prefecture. Situated at the northernmost tip of the Tsugaru Peninsula, the island is a scenic destination where history, legend, and dramatic coastal landscapes come together.

The island is now connected to the mainland by a concrete bridge, making it easy to visit on foot. Obijima is particularly known as one of the places associated with the legendary northern journey of Minamoto no Yoshitsune, a famous warrior from Japanese history. The island offers an intriguing combination of traditional legend and the rugged natural beauty of northern Aomori.

The Legend of Yoshitsune and the Origin of Obijima’s Name

According to the Legend of Yoshitsune’s Northern Journey, Minamoto no Yoshitsune was pursued by forces sent by his own older brother, Minamoto no Yoritomo. After escaping his pursuers, Yoshitsune is said to have traveled north in search of a route to Ezo, present-day Hokkaido.

During this journey, he is believed to have reached the Minmaya area of what is now Sotogahama Town. According to the legend, Yoshitsune decided to cross the Tsugaru Strait from here in order to continue northward.

Before setting out, he is said to have retied his obi, the traditional Japanese sash worn with a kimono. This act is traditionally regarded as the origin of the island’s name: Obijima, meaning “Obi Island.”

Although this story belongs to the realm of local legend rather than established historical fact, it has been passed down through generations and remains an important part of the cultural heritage surrounding Cape Tappizaki.

Dramatic Scenery at the Tip of Cape Tappizaki

Obijima lies at the very tip of Cape Tappizaki, which is part of Tsugaru Quasi-National Park. From the island and surrounding coastline, visitors can enjoy expansive views across the Tsugaru Strait.

On clear days, the Matsumae Peninsula of Hokkaido can be seen across the water. The endless expanse of sea and sky creates a spectacular panorama that conveys both the harshness and beauty of Japan’s northernmost landscapes.

Standing on the island with the sea breeze around you offers a strong sense of being at the edge of Honshu. The scenery is particularly impressive when the weather is clear, but even the rugged coastline and changing weather conditions contribute to the distinctive atmosphere of Cape Tappizaki.

Tappizaki Benten Shrine

A small but distinctive red shrine stands on Obijima: Tappizaki Benten Shrine. Although modest in size, the shrine has long attracted visitors who come to pray for safe voyages and good relationships.

The shrine is closely associated with the island’s maritime setting and has become one of Obijima’s most recognizable landmarks. Visiting the shrine while reflecting on the Yoshitsune legend offers an opportunity to experience the connection between the region’s history, local beliefs, and the sea.

A Region Connected to Literature and Music

The wider Cape Tappizaki area also has strong connections with Japanese literature and music. The area appears in “Tsugaru,” a travel work by the renowned Japanese writer Osamu Dazai.

Cape Tappizaki is also famously associated with “Tsugaru Kaikyo Fuyugeshiki”, a popular song by Japanese singer Sayuri Ishikawa. The song helped make the dramatic image of the Tsugaru Strait in winter familiar to audiences throughout Japan.

These literary and musical connections, together with the Yoshitsune legend, give Obijima and the surrounding Cape Tappizaki area a distinctive cultural atmosphere. The landscape is not only visually impressive but also deeply connected with stories, songs, and memories of northern Japan.

Experience the Northern Edge of the Tsugaru Peninsula

Obijima Island is a small destination, but it brings together many of the elements that make northern Aomori fascinating: legendary history, traditional beliefs, literature, music, and spectacular coastal scenery.

When visiting Cape Tappizaki, take the time to cross the bridge to Obijima and walk around the island. Feel the sea breeze of the Tsugaru Strait, visit Tappizaki Benten Shrine, and look across the water toward Hokkaido while imagining the stories of those who once dreamed of traveling north.

For travelers exploring the northernmost part of the Tsugaru Peninsula, Obijima offers a quiet and memorable way to experience the natural beauty and cultural heritage of northern Aomori.
