A Historic Park Dating Back to the Meiji Period
The history of Gappo Park dates back to 1880. Mizuhara Eisaku, a former gardener for the Hirosaki Domain, planned the creation of the park. Construction began in 1881 through the efforts of local residents, including donations from the community and the dedication of the Kakizaki brothers.
The park was completed in 1894 and was subsequently donated to Aomori Town, which later became Aomori City. Since then, it has developed into a beloved recreational space for local residents.
Stone monuments, commemorative trees, and other features throughout the grounds preserve traces of the park’s long history. The park also experienced significant changes after World War II, when part of the grounds was requisitioned by the U.S. military.
In 1989, Gappo Park was selected as one of the 100 Best Urban Parks in Japan, recognizing its combination of historical character, natural beauty, and recreational value.
A Famous Cherry Blossom Destination
One of the most popular times to visit Gappo Park is spring, when approximately 700 cherry trees burst into bloom.
The park is mainly planted with Somei Yoshino cherry trees, but visitors can also see weeping cherry trees and O-yama-zakura mountain cherries. The blossoms create beautiful avenues and tunnels of pink, making the park a popular hanami destination.
During the annual Aomori Spring Festival, the park becomes particularly lively, with food stalls and various events attracting both local residents and visitors.
San’yo no Matsu: A Historic Black Pine
Near the center of the park stands San’yo no Matsu, a magnificent black pine tree believed to be more than 460 years old. It has been designated a natural monument by Aomori City and is one of the park’s most distinctive landmarks.
According to local tradition, successive lords of the Tsugaru Domain once held drinking parties beneath this pine tree. Its enormous age and historical associations make it a fascinating reminder of the area’s past.
The tree was partially damaged by a typhoon in 1991, but it continues to stand as a symbolic feature of Gappo Park.
A Seaside Park Beside Mutsu Bay
The northern side of Gappo Park faces Mutsu Bay, and a swimming beach is opened here during summer.
It is unusual to find a large urban park with a swimming beach so close to the center of a city. During the summer season, families and visitors can enjoy the seaside while remaining within easy reach of central Aomori.
The waterfront also provides an attractive setting for a leisurely walk. In particular, the view across Mutsu Bay at sunset offers a peaceful way to end a day of sightseeing.

The former Oshu Kaido, one of the historic highways of northern Japan, also passes through the central part of the park. Today, the route forms part of the walking environment and adds a historical dimension to a stroll through the grounds.

Summer: Swimming and Seaside Walks

Autumn: Colorful Foliage

Winter: Snow and Cross-Country Skiing
During the snowy season, a walking ski course is prepared within the park. Ski equipment can also be borrowed free of charge.

How to Get to Gappo Park
Gappo Park is conveniently accessible from central Aomori by local bus.
Aomori City Bus: Take a bus on the Kenbyo, Harabetsu, Asamushi, or Toyama routes and get off at Gappo Koen-mae. The park is approximately 3 minutes on foot from the stop.
Konan Bus: Take a Goshogawara or Kuroishi route bus and get off at Gappo Koen-mae. It is approximately 3 minutes on foot.
Towada Sky Bus: Take the Towada City route and get off at Okazukuri-cho 1-chome. The park is approximately 5 minutes on foot.
Shimokita Kotsu: Take the Aomori route and get off at Gappo Koen-guchi. It is approximately 3 minutes on foot.
