A Scenic Landscape That Changes with the Seasons
One of the greatest attractions of Saruka Park is the way its scenery changes throughout the year. Visitors can enjoy a completely different atmosphere depending on when they visit, making the park a destination worth returning to in different seasons.
Spring: Cherry Blossoms Around the Ponds
Spring is one of the most beautiful times to visit Saruka Park. Approximately 330 cherry trees bloom around Kagami-ga-Ike and Miharashi-ga-Ike, creating colorful tunnels of flowers along the walking paths.
The reflection of the cherry blossoms on the surface of the ponds creates a particularly beautiful scene. When Mount Iwaki can be seen in the distance, the combination of mountains, water, and flowers provides an excellent opportunity for photography.
Summer: A Sea of Lotus Flowers
In summer, the scenery changes dramatically as lotus flowers bloom across Kagami-ga-Ike. The delicate pink flowers floating above the green leaves create a peaceful and refreshing landscape.
The lotus is also closely connected with Buddhist culture in Japan, making the summer scenery an opportunity to appreciate both the natural beauty and cultural atmosphere of the area.
Autumn and Winter: Colorful Leaves and Snowy Landscapes
In autumn, the trees throughout the park turn brilliant shades of red, orange, and yellow. The colorful foliage surrounding the ponds creates a calm and picturesque setting for walking and photography.
During winter, the park becomes a quiet snow-covered landscape. The ponds, trees, and surrounding grounds are covered in white, creating an entirely different atmosphere from the lively spring and summer seasons.
Enjoy a Boat Ride on Miharashi-ga-Ike Pond
One of the most enjoyable activities at Saruka Park is taking a boat ride on Miharashi-ga-Ike Pond. This activity is especially popular with families and couples because visitors can enjoy the scenery from a different perspective while slowly traveling across the water.
In spring, passengers can look up at the cherry blossoms around the pond. In summer, the water provides a refreshing atmosphere, while autumn brings colorful foliage to the surrounding landscape.
Two types of boats are available: pedal boats and rowboats. Both offer an easy and relaxing way to experience the park.

Explore the Six Japanese Model Gardens
Saruka Park is also home to six model Japanese gardens. These gardens were created through the cooperation of landscaping businesses from the nearby Onoe area, which was once well known for its traditional gardening industry.
Each garden has its own design and atmosphere. Visitors can walk along the paths and admire carefully arranged plants, stones, ponds, and other elements characteristic of Japanese garden design.
The gardens are particularly enjoyable for travelers interested in traditional Japanese aesthetics. Because the scenery changes with the seasons, the gardens offer something different throughout the year.
Discover Koikoi Shrine, a Unique Local Power Spot
Near Miharashi-ga-Ike Pond is a small red torii gate known as Koikoi Shrine. In recent years, this unusual little spot has become popular as a local “power spot,” a place believed by some visitors to have special spiritual energy.
Visitors can purchase food and feed the carp living in the pond. When food is thrown into the water, more than 100 carp may gather rapidly around the feeding area.
The energetic movement of the fish is one of the most entertaining sights at the pond. Their sudden rush toward the food has even led to them being described locally as “fierce carp.” It is a fun and memorable experience, particularly for families traveling with children.

Seasonal Events at Saruka Park
Hirakawa Cherry Blossom Festival
The Hirakawa Cherry Blossom Festival is generally held around late April and is one of the park’s major seasonal events.
During the festival, visitors can see displays and sales of garden trees and flowers, enjoy light meals, and participate in various activities. In the evening, the cherry trees are illuminated, creating a magical atmosphere that is quite different from the daytime scenery.
Lotus Flower Festival
The Lotus Flower Festival is held from around late July. During this period, visitors can admire the beautiful Japanese lotus flowers covering much of Kagami-ga-Ike Pond.
Food stalls and hands-on activities are also available during the event, allowing visitors to enjoy the summer scenery while experiencing the lively atmosphere of a local Japanese festival.
Relax at Saruka-so Hot Spring
Within Saruka Park is Saruka-so, a hot spring facility known for its natural hot spring water. The facility is located in the grounds associated with Saruka Shrine, a historically important spiritual site in the Tsugaru region.
The spring is classified as an alkaline simple hot spring. Its relatively gentle water is traditionally appreciated for its smooth feel on the skin, and it is sometimes described as a “beauty bath” in Japan.
Because the water is considered gentle and less irritating, the hot spring can be enjoyed by a wide range of visitors, from children to older adults.
Outdoor Baths and Facilities
The open-air bathing area includes a rock bath with warmer water and a reclining bath with cooler water. On warm summer days, visitors can relax in the reclining bath and enjoy a leisurely half-body soak.
The facility also includes a restaurant, banquet rooms, and meeting rooms. As a result, Saruka-so can be used not only for bathing but also for meals, relaxation, and various group activities.
Local Specialties at the Restaurant
The restaurant, Motenashi, serves several popular local-style dishes. Among its specialties are curry miso milk ramen and spicy miso ramen.
Curry miso milk ramen combines the rich flavor of miso with the aroma of curry and the mild creaminess of milk. Butter adds another layer of richness, creating a distinctive combination that may be especially interesting for travelers looking to try a unique Japanese noodle dish.
Saruka Shrine: The Cultural Heart of the Park
At the center of Saruka Park stands the historic Saruka Shrine. The shrine is traditionally believed to have been founded in 807 and has long been an important place of worship in the Tsugaru region.
In earlier times, the shrine was associated with the name Jinja Daigongen (Jinja-gu) and was respected by warriors and other worshippers. Today, its grounds provide a peaceful setting where visitors can experience both Japanese religious culture and the natural beauty of the park.
The two ponds, Kagami-ga-Ike and Miharashi-ga-Ike, are located within the shrine’s extensive grounds. The lotus-covered scenery of Kagami-ga-Ike is particularly characteristic of the area and forms one of the most memorable views associated with Saruka Shrine.
Historic Architecture and Cultural Heritage
The main sanctuary was rebuilt in 1826 and features a traditional three-bay Nagare-zukuri architectural style. Its unusual structure, including the way the building’s width is divided into three bays without a front chamber, has been recognized as an important cultural property of Aomori Prefecture.
The shrine grounds are also notable for their rich natural environment. In the past, the area was designated as a natural monument for its breeding grounds of cormorants and herons, demonstrating the long-standing connection between the shrine, its ponds, and the surrounding wildlife.
A Peaceful Destination for Experiencing Northern Japan
Saruka Park offers much more than a simple walk through a Japanese park. Cherry blossoms, lotus flowers, autumn foliage, snow, ponds, Japanese gardens, boats, carp, hot springs, local food, and historic religious culture can all be experienced within the same destination.
For international visitors, the park provides an opportunity to enjoy some of the quieter and more traditional aspects of Aomori. Rather than focusing only on major tourist attractions, travelers can take their time walking beside the ponds, viewing seasonal flowers, visiting Saruka Shrine, relaxing in a hot spring, and enjoying local food.
With its changing scenery and combination of nature and culture, Saruka Park is a rewarding destination in Hirakawa City for travelers who want to experience the seasonal beauty and everyday charm of northern Japan.
