Hirosaki’s Long History of Apple Growing
Hirosaki is now one of Japan’s leading apple-producing areas, with a history of approximately 140 years. The beginnings of apple cultivation in the region are often associated with the period following the abolition of the feudal domains in the early Meiji era.
As former samurai lost their traditional positions and livelihoods, apple saplings were distributed to some of them, helping establish a new agricultural industry in the region. Over generations, apple cultivation became deeply rooted in the landscape and culture of Hirosaki.
Made with Apples from Kudo Farm
Located near Hirosaki Castle, Kudo Farm has been growing apples for generations since around 1877. The farm produces apple juice using only fully ripened apples freshly harvested from its own orchards.
The farm’s regular apple juice is appreciated for allowing the natural character of each apple variety to shine through. Building on this experience, Kudo Farm developed a new type of apple juice specifically designed to taste delicious when heated.
Created for the Cold Climate of Aomori
Aomori is known for its long, cold winters, with roughly half of the year characterized by chilly weather. The idea behind Hot Apple Juice was to create an apple drink that could be enjoyed throughout the year, including during the cold season.
After considerable experimentation, Kudo Farm created a blend designed to become even more enjoyable when warmed. It combines Fuji apples, known for their well-balanced sweetness and acidity, with Jonagold apples, which have a naturally rich sweetness.
When heated, the combination produces a comforting aroma and brings out the pleasant sweetness and acidity of the apples. It is a simple but distinctive way to experience the flavor of Hirosaki’s famous apples.
Enjoy It Warm and Try Your Own Variations
Hot Apple Juice can be enjoyed simply by warming it gently, but it also works well as a base for creative variations. For example, you can add fresh ginger for a warming spicy note, mix it with black tea, or add a little cinnamon for a fragrant winter-style drink.
These simple additions make it easy to adjust the flavor to your preference while keeping the natural taste of the apples at the center.
A New Favorite in Hirosaki
Although apple juice itself is a classic local specialty, Hot Apple Juice offers a fresh perspective on how Aomori’s famous apples can be enjoyed. Its warm serving style is especially suited to the region’s cold climate, while the carefully selected blend of Fuji and Jonagold creates a naturally balanced flavor.
For visitors exploring Hirosaki, Hot Apple Juice is an interesting local specialty that combines the area’s long apple-growing tradition with a creative idea for enjoying apples in a new way.
