Aoike(Blue Pond)

Mysterious blue lake

Aoike is one of the “Twelve Lakes,” a group of lakes and marshes of various sizes in the Shirakami Mountains, and is surrounded by mountains over 1,000 meters high.

The surface of the water shines a brilliant cobalt blue, reflecting the surrounding trees like a mirror, creating a fantastic atmosphere.

The pond, with a surface area of 975 square meters and a depth of 9 meters, is formed by a mixture of rainwater and groundwater, so the water is extremely clear and one can see fallen trees and large rotting beech trees at the bottom of the pond.

And the clear blue surface of the lake, as if ink had been poured over it, is mysterious. The surface of the lake reflects the surrounding trees like a mirror, changing its hue depending on the time of day and angle, creating a fantastic atmosphere.

Even in the Aomori winter, the water temperature remains at 9°C throughout the year and the pond never freezes, thus maintaining its beautiful clarity and shining blue color, making Aoike famous as a power spot in Aomori.

The primeval beech forest surrounding Aoike extends into the Shirakami Mountains, creating beautiful scenery along with the mountain ranges.

In addition, many plants and animals inhabit the surrounding area, providing visitors with a sense of the richness of nature.

Many tourists visit this place, which was registered as Japan’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site (Natural Heritage) together with Yakushima Island in 1993. The beautiful scenery created by nature fascinates visitors.
