The Famous “Snow Corridor” of Hakkoda
A Road Surrounded by Giant Walls of Snow
The most famous feature of the Hakkoda-Towada Gold Line is the spectacular Snow Corridor that appears in spring.
The Hakkoda Mountains are one of Japan’s heaviest snowfall areas. Because of the extreme winter conditions, an approximately 8-kilometer section between Sukayu Onsen and Yachi Onsen on National Route 103 is closed during winter, generally from late November through March 31.
When spring arrives, enormous snow-clearing operations begin. Snowplows gradually cut a passage through the accumulated snow, reopening the road in early April.
At this time, towering walls of snow can rise to approximately 8 meters high on both sides of the road. Driving between these enormous white walls creates the impression of traveling through a frozen canyon.
The Snow Corridor has become one of Aomori’s most iconic spring sights and attracts visitors from throughout Japan and beyond.
The Best Time to See the Snow Corridor
Early April Offers the Most Impressive Views
The Snow Corridor can remain visible until around early May, but the walls gradually become lower as the snow melts. Dust and road debris can also darken the surface of the snow.
For this reason, early April is generally considered the best time to see the corridor at its most dramatic. The freshly cleared road is bordered by enormous, brilliantly white walls, creating an unforgettable landscape.
In some years, special walking events are held shortly after the road opens, allowing visitors to walk directly through the Snow Corridor instead of viewing it only from a vehicle.
For international travelers who have never experienced the scale of Japan’s heavy snowfall regions, this is a particularly memorable way to appreciate the power of winter in the mountains.
Beautiful Scenery in Every Season
Spring: Snow Walls and Fresh Greenery
Spring begins with the Snow Corridor, but once the snow melts, the landscape quickly transforms. Fresh green leaves appear throughout the surrounding beech forests, creating a bright and refreshing atmosphere.
The contrast between the remaining snow and the emerging greenery makes this period especially attractive for photographers and nature lovers.
Summer: Open Mountain Landscapes
During early summer and summer, the route becomes surrounded by lush vegetation and refreshing highland scenery.
At approximately 540 meters above sea level, Kayano Plateau is one of the scenic highlights. The road passes through open grasslands and low vegetation, offering broad views and a sense of spaciousness that contrasts with the dense forests elsewhere along the route.
The cooler mountain environment also makes the area an appealing escape from the warmer lowlands during the summer months.
Autumn: A Sea of Red and Gold
Autumn brings a completely different atmosphere to the Gold Line. The forests around the Hakkoda Mountains and Lake Towada turn vivid shades of red, orange, and yellow.
The colorful mountains create a beautiful contrast with the blue waters of Lake Towada, making autumn one of the most popular seasons for scenic drives through the region.
Hot Springs and Mountain Attractions Along the Route
Sukayu Onsen and Yachi Onsen
The Gold Line is more than a scenic driving route. Several historic hot-spring destinations are located along or near the road, including Sukayu Onsen and Yachi Onsen.
These traditional hot springs provide an ideal opportunity to take a break during a road trip and experience another important aspect of Japanese culture. After traveling through the mountain landscape, relaxing in a natural hot spring can be the perfect way to recover from a long day of sightseeing.
Hakkoda Ropeway
Another highlight of the Hakkoda area is the Hakkoda Ropeway. The ropeway takes visitors toward the summit area of Mount Tamoyachi, where they can enjoy expansive views of the surrounding mountains.
Depending on the season, visitors can see fresh greenery, colorful autumn forests, or snow-covered mountain scenery. In winter, the Hakkoda Mountains are particularly famous for their heavy snowfall and spectacular snow-covered trees known as “snow monsters”.
A Scenic Route Through Towada-Hachimantai National Park
The Hakkoda-Towada Gold Line passes through an area of outstanding natural beauty within Towada-Hachimantai National Park.
The route links several of northern Japan’s most celebrated landscapes, making it possible to combine a scenic drive with visits to hot springs, mountain viewpoints, forests, waterfalls, and lakes.
Among the major attractions along the wider route are the Hakkoda Mountains, Kayano Plateau, Sukayu Onsen, Kasamatsu Pass, Oirase Stream, and Lake Towada.
Each destination has a different character, so the journey itself becomes part of the sightseeing experience rather than simply a way to travel from one attraction to another.
Driving the Hakkoda-Towada Gold Line
For travelers with access to a rental car, the Gold Line offers one of the best ways to explore the Hakkoda and Lake Towada area at your own pace.
The route is especially attractive because visitors can stop at viewpoints, hot springs, walking trails, and other attractions along the way. In autumn, for example, travelers can take their time enjoying the changing colors of the mountain forests, while in spring the Snow Corridor itself becomes the main destination.
However, mountain weather can change quickly, and winter conditions can be severe. The section of National Route 103 associated with the Snow Corridor is closed during the winter season, so travelers should check the latest road-opening information and weather conditions before setting out.
A Journey Through the Changing Seasons
The greatest appeal of the Hakkoda-Towada Gold Line is that it is not simply a road connecting two destinations. It is a scenic journey through one of northern Japan’s most dramatic natural environments.
In spring, enormous walls of snow rise beside the road. In early summer, beech forests turn brilliant green. Summer brings refreshing highland landscapes, while autumn transforms the mountains into a spectacular palette of red and gold.
The surrounding hot springs, forests, mountains, Oirase Stream, and Lake Towada add even more opportunities for exploration.
For international visitors looking to experience the power and beauty of Aomori’s natural landscape, the Hakkoda-Towada Gold Line is an unforgettable route. Whether you visit specifically to see the famous Snow Corridor or travel through the area during the warmer months, the changing scenery makes every journey a unique experience.
