A Magnificent Panorama of Lake Towada
Lake, Peninsula, and Mountains in One View
One of the distinctive features of Hakka Pass Observation Deck is its wide view across the lake, where Nakayama Peninsula and Okura Peninsula extend into the water and appear to overlap from this elevated viewpoint.
Directly ahead rises Mount Ohanabe, one of the mountains forming the outer rim of the Towada Caldera. Behind it are the mountains of the Southern Hakkoda Range, creating several layers of mountain scenery beyond the lake.
On exceptionally clear days, the view extends even farther toward the Hakkoda Mountains, including Kushigamine. The layered landscape of blue water, forest-covered mountains, and distant peaks gives the panorama an impressive sense of depth.
A Classic View of Towada
The scenery from Hakka Pass is often described as one of the finest views of Lake Towada. Unlike viewpoints that focus on only one section of the lake, this location allows visitors to appreciate the broader landscape at once.
The view is particularly striking because of the contrast between the deep blue lake and the green or colorful forests surrounding it. Depending on the weather and season, the same landscape can look completely different from one visit to the next.
Lake Towada Through the Four Seasons
Spring: Mountains Touched with Cherry Blossoms
In May, wild mountain cherry trees begin adding delicate colors to the surrounding hills. The soft pink blossoms stand out against the fresh greenery and the blue waters of the lake.
As spring progresses, the forests become increasingly lush, creating a refreshing landscape that is especially beautiful from the elevated viewpoint.
Summer: Fresh Green Forests and the Blue Lake
In June, new leaves cover the surrounding mountains in vivid green. The combination of the fresh forest and the blue waters of Lake Towada creates a bright, refreshing summer landscape.
During July and August, the lakeside becomes lively with visitors enjoying summer activities, camping, and events such as the Lake Towada Festival. From Hakka Pass, travelers can enjoy a broad view of the vibrant summer landscape from above.
Autumn: Brilliant Colors Around the Caldera
September and October are among the most spectacular times to visit Hakka Pass. The forests covering the outer rim of the caldera gradually turn brilliant shades of red, orange, and yellow.
Viewed from the observation deck, the colorful mountains surround the deep blue lake like a vast natural painting. The combination of autumn foliage, clear mountain air, and the expansive lake view makes this one of the most memorable seasons for sightseeing.
Winter: A Quiet and Mysterious Landscape
In winter, the number of visitors decreases and the surroundings become remarkably quiet. Snow and ice transform the mountains and lake into a stark but beautiful landscape.
The winter scenery has a completely different character from the colorful seasons. The silence, snow-covered forests, and cold mountain air create a mysterious and powerful atmosphere that highlights the wild nature of the Towada region.
A Convenient Stop on a Scenic Drive
The Southern Gateway to Lake Towada
Hakka Pass is an important stop for travelers driving to Lake Towada. From the Tohoku Expressway’s Towada Interchange, visitors can follow National Route 103 toward the lake.
The pass is also the endpoint of the Jukai Line for travelers arriving from the direction of Odate and Kosaka. As a result, it is a natural stopping point during a road trip through the mountains of northern Japan.
Facilities for Travelers
Restrooms and souvenir shops are available around the observation deck, making it a convenient place to take a break during a drive.
The parking area near the observation deck can become crowded during peak sightseeing periods. When the main parking area is full, another relatively spacious parking area with restrooms can be found about 200 meters away near the entrance to the Jukai Line.
For travelers exploring Lake Towada by rental car, Hakka Pass is therefore both a scenic destination and a practical place to stop, stretch your legs, and enjoy the view.
Visit Shimeitei Observation Deck as Well
Another Famous View of Lake Towada
About a 15-minute walk from Hakka Pass Observation Deck is Shimeitei Observation Deck. It is known as one of the locations selected as part of Japan’s New Eight Scenic Views in 1927.
Shimeitei is also popular today because Lake Towada can appear almost heart-shaped when viewed from a particular angle.
While Hakka Pass provides a broad and dramatic panorama, Shimeitei offers a more distinctive composition of the lake. Visiting both viewpoints allows travelers to appreciate two very different perspectives of Lake Towada.
Lake Towada and Towada-Hachimantai National Park
A Volcanic Lake Surrounded by Forests
Lake Towada was formed through volcanic activity that began approximately 200,000 years ago. The lake is a distinctive double caldera lake, created by repeated volcanic activity and collapse of the surrounding land.
Today, Lake Towada forms one of the central attractions of Towada-Hachimantai National Park. The calm lake surface and extensive forests covering the surrounding caldera create a landscape of exceptional natural beauty.
The area around Lake Towada has been designated a Special Place of Scenic Beauty and Natural Monument of Japan, recognizing the outstanding value of its landscape and natural environment.
Enjoy the Lake from Different Perspectives
Hakka Pass offers an elevated perspective, but there are many other ways to experience Lake Towada. Lakeside walking trails allow visitors to explore the shoreline on foot, while sightseeing cruises provide views from the water.
There are also campgrounds and other outdoor recreation opportunities around the lake. Travelers who continue south toward the Hachimantai area can discover highland landscapes, hot springs, mountain scenery, and alpine plants.
This makes Lake Towada an excellent destination for combining scenic drives, hiking, outdoor activities, photography, and hot-spring experiences.
Important Information for Winter Visits
Hakka Pass Observation Deck and its restrooms are normally closed during the winter season, from around mid-November through late April. Because conditions in the mountain area can change significantly, travelers should check road conditions and facility opening information before visiting.
Winter driving in the surrounding mountain region can also require extra care because of snow and icy roads. Travelers using rental cars should check local conditions and make sure their vehicle is properly equipped for winter travel.
Experience One of the Finest Views of Lake Towada
Hakka Pass Observation Deck is one of the essential stops for anyone exploring Lake Towada. From an elevation of approximately 631 meters, visitors can look across the deep blue lake toward its forest-covered caldera, surrounding peninsulas, and distant mountains.
Each season brings a different atmosphere, from the delicate colors of spring and vivid summer greenery to brilliant autumn foliage and the quiet beauty of winter. The changing scenery makes Hakka Pass worth visiting at different times of year.
Its convenient location along a major scenic driving route also makes it an ideal place to stop on the way to Lake Towada. Combine the visit with Shimeitei Observation Deck, a lakeside walk, or a sightseeing cruise to experience the lake from several different perspectives.
Whether you are visiting for photography, nature, a road trip, or simply a spectacular view, Hakka Pass offers an unforgettable introduction to the vast beauty of Lake Towada and the mountains of northern Japan.
